Powerscourt School opened in 1818. As a purpose-built schoolhouse, it was comparatively rare in Ireland, where hedge-schooling was the dominant means of education.

Why did it open? How was it  managed?

This illustrated talk will consider some of the early history of the school, giving some of the local context of Enniskerry as well as the renewed interest in supporting education among the landed gentry in Wicklow.
