Botanical Illustration is the art of depicting plants for scientific purposes and has been practiced for centuries. Mostly executed in watercolour, botanical paintings highlight beauty & detail, while often creating beautiful artwork. In this practical workshop participants will be guided through the stages of drawing and painting a chosen subject, while learning about the history of this popular art.

The workshop is suitable for all levels, a small class ensures individual attention.

Materials will be supplied.

About the artist:

Yanny Petters has been painting exquisitely detailed portraits of wild plants since the 1990s. Her love and interest in botanical art stemmed from her work as a signwriter where plant themes were common in decorative design. As well as working in watercolours and oils Yanny also specialises in ‘painting on glass’, a technique she has been developing since her signwriting years. Her paintings are in a number of important collections including the Dr. Shirley Sherwood Collection at Kew Gardens, London and the Office of Public Works, in Wicklow Mountains National Park and the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin.

Recently Yanny has been exploring Nature Print, which is a form of fine art monoprint in which the plant itself is used to print from. The technique was used in the Middle Ages to illustrate Herbals for Medicinal Plant identification.

Yanny teaches watercolour painting and drawing from nature and the purpose of her work is to raise awareness of the wonders of nature and especially the wild plants of Ireland.

She is a member of the Irish Society of Botanical Artists and the Water Colour Society of Ireland.
