Students will learn how to paint a portrait from the live model, in a studio setting.
First, the basic volumes and planes of the head will be considered and discussed, and then more detailed surface form. Students will work on a portrait, moving through 3 steps.  Block-in the major planes in pencil, charcoal or directly, in oils.

Students will then work on dividing light from shadow, with an emphasis on the making sure the “down” planes are in shadow and the “up” planes in the light.

We will then model the major forms first, and then move on to the smaller sub-forms, setting up a hierarchy of value and color, and finally nuanced form and details.

A list of materials will be provided upon registration.
