About this Course

This six week course will take the artist to experience the beautiful Japanese Gardens in Powerscourt Estate. Each student will find a scene or reference which they would like to draw and paint, bringing their experience to their canvas. The work will begin by teaching students how to take a a really good reference image. Students will then prepare that image to work from as part of the creation of a unique piece of work. And then the student artist will bring the picture using which ever medium they choose (David is happy to tutor in watercolour, acrylic or oil) from an image to a personal painting. This course is suitable for all levels of artist. This course has ‘field trip’ elements, and will not be wholly spent in the Studio. It is important that all participants are mobile, and would enjoy being outside for some elements. The structure of the course will be somewhat decided by the weather conditions and suitability. Students will come away having learned about image referencing, gridding (if required) paint mixing and most importantly with a piece of unique work.

About David

David McEwen qualified as a Teacher of Fine Art in 1977. He studied at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne for some time, actually starting when he was 13, Professor Victor Pasmore included him in a Special Class for horrible precocious brats! - Pasmore made him draw for a year and mix paint for another ….

For a thirteen year old it was boring but looking back on it now it was the best apprenticeship he could have had, especially as when he returned to Art School in the seventies lecturers didn’t actually teach much and left students to muddle through.

McEwen took his B.Ed., and became Head of Art in a Midlands School where he also established Classes for Adults. A wish to paint more brought him to The West of Ireland where he read for a Masters in Educational Psychology at University College Galway.

Exhibitions in Kenny’s and many other Galleries in The West Followed along with a number of major commissions.

In 1997, McEwen moved to The South of France where he established L’Atellier du Soulondre and L’Association de Beaux Arts de Herault of which he became Artistic Director and Professor of Painting. During the next twenty years he taught thousands of painters at all levels but also completed over 1500 commissions and several lecture trips to The U.S. and The Falkland Islands, exhibiting in Paris, London, Madrid, San Diego, Charleston and various Galleries in Florida.

McEwen’ s work is in collections throughout the world and he has been commissioned to paint Equestrian and Human portraits by many Olympic Riders, Owners and members of European and Middle Eastern Royal Families. He has been a member of prestigious Art Societies in Europe and The U.S., has won Gold Medals in Major International Competitions and was twice Runner Up Painter of the Year with The Society of All Artists.

In 2017 he returned Home to paint ……… But ….. he wanted to teach again. He is a Painter who loves to Teach and a Teacher who loves to paint, so where better to live than Wicklow ?
