aBOUT THE CLASS
During this course Kieran will share his knowledge and bring students through his process for painting. He will share his fundamentals of painting from composition, defining and seeing values, colour theory and mixing to work through a repeatable process for painting that students can build a foundation on.
Introduction to acrylics the medium and considerations for its use.

Underpainting, defining values and keying
Colour mixing and theory
Value compression and seeing values
Working towards fine detail
Each week will be practical exercises with demos to allow students to build a set of foundations for their own work throughout.
Below is a rough outline of what you will cover and tackle over the weeks
Week 1:
Intro to Acrylics as a medium, considerations and what to expect over the 6 weeks
Value studies from direct observation
Week 2:
Continuing with direct observation we will work on underpainting and colour studies
Colour theory (we’ll discuss aspects of colour theory most weeks as part of our work)
Week 3:
Subject and composition (weather permitting we’ll go out to gather photos/sketches for week 4, 5 and 6)
Thumbnail compositions/Value studies
Colour theory (we’ll discuss aspects of colour theory most weeks as part of our work)
Week 4:
Working from our value studies and sketches/photos we will begin our underpaintings
Keying your painting
Colour theory (we’ll discuss aspects of colour theory most weeks as part of our work)
Week 5/6:
Blocking in phases
Working on fine detail and last stages on our paintings
Colour theory (we’ll discuss aspects of colour theory most weeks as part of our work)

A4 sketchbook (that can take some paint), pencils or pens just for planning and compositional work when needed.
Brushes:
Please bring a selection of brushes including flats, filberts and rounds of medium to small for each.
E.g. Flat size 12 and 4 | Round size 8 and 2 | Filbert size 16
Palette:
Stay wet palette or a normal palette with a water spray bottle.
Panels:
25cm x 35cm, 30cm x 40cm - canvas or wood panels
Acrylics:
Good quality acrylics are recommended - e.g Windsor & Newton Artist Quality or Golden

Cadmium yellow medium or light
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
Cadmium Red (or similar red)
Cerulean Blue
Ultramarine Blue
