In the mid 1800’s advances in paint, brushes, and the advent of photography brought about a new movement in art which became known as Impressionism. Known for being ‘loose’ and ‘painterly’ this is a much loved era in art with post-Impressionism hot on its heels taking colour to the next level.

In this 4 day course Sinéad will guide you through creating an oil painting in the styles of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

What you’ll learn:

  • Choosing and using materials

  • Understanding colour theory

  • Optical mixing and the science of colour perception

  • Expressive brushwork

  • Alla Prima (wet-on-wet) techniques

If you love Impressionism and wish to pay homage, or if you simply want to loosen up your current painting approach this course may suit you.

Not suitable for beginners. Some knowledge of oil paint required.

Meet Sinead

Sinead is a Cork native and studied animation in DLIADT. After over a decade of working in animation, illustration and graphic design, Sinead chose to change her focus to painting and re-kindled her first love, art, right here at the Schoolhouse.

Sinead went on to win RTÉ's televised competition 'Painting the Nation' in 2016. In 2018 she was awarded the Provost Fund for The Visual and Performing Arts by Trinity College Dublin. Sinead's work is in private collections around the world and her winning piece from 'Painting the Nation' was acquired by the OPW. Sinead featured on the WakeUp with Headspace and came second (twice) on Sky Arts, Portrait Artist of the Week, also winning the accolade of 'sitters pick'. She most recently exhibited with ArtNetDLR and the RHA and a participant of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2023.

Sinead works predominantly in oils. She paints with emotion and an expressive colourful style. She is passionate about teaching and sharing knowledge.

"Drawing and painting are ways for me to play, observe and merge the inner and outer worlds and I am fascinated by the human psyche. For me the best vehicle for exploring emotion is portraiture and particularly small abstract moments. It excites me when a painting looks different up close and so I strive to make each colour and each brushstroke slightly different, jigsawing a portrait together with abstract colourful landscapes."

Sinead is a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland and Dublin Art Society
