aBOUT THE WORKSHOP

In this two day workshop I’ll share my process of landscape painting. We’ll cover all aspects of my process from subject choice through to completed work. Along the way I’ll share my learnings from working outside and observing the landscape.

Weather permitting, we'll work on our research and composition studies and initial paintings outdoors, then cover theory discussions and further painting process in the studio. This will be a fun and relaxed session, my aim is to share as much of my learnings as I can and work with you on any troublesome areas you are facing as a painter.

We’ll spend the first day researching our subjects for painting, discussing and working on compositions with sketching and value studies. We’ll then work on our initial underpaintings.

Day two I’ll demo taking my painting from an initial stage to completion discussing strategies for colour and realism. I’ll work with all participants during the day to help where required with their pieces.

    • Introduction to painting in the landscape
Gain practical tips for setting up and working confidently outdoors, making the most of natural light and conditions.

    • Finding your subject
Learn how to choose engaging and inspiring subjects that will bring energy and focus to your paintings.

    • Mastering composition
Discover how to structure your painting for balance, impact, and visual flow.

    • Sketching and value studies
Practice quick sketches and tonal studies to strengthen your understanding of light, shadow, and depth.

    • Visualising the landscape
Develop the ability to see beyond what’s in front of you and interpret the landscape in a painterly, expressive way.

    • Building the painting – first stages
Explore underpainting techniques, defining values, and keying your work to set up a strong foundation.

    • Colour in landscape – towards realism
Learn how to mix and apply colours that capture the atmosphere and mood of the scene.

    • Value compression and recognising values
Train your eye to simplify complex views, identify essential tonal ranges, and achieve greater clarity in your work.

    • Working towards finer details
Refine your painting with details, textures, and finishing touches that bring your landscape to life.

    • Easels will be provided but bring your normal materials and brushes you are familiar with. If you have a plein air set-up please bring it with you.

    • For surface I’ll be working on a 30xm x 40xm stretched Canvas, but canvas and wood panels are fine too.

    • Please bring a phone and ideally an ipad to take and work from reference photos to work on in the studio.

    • Sketchbook, pencils or pens for composition studies

    • I’ll be using acrylics in this workshop and my recommended colours would be:

      Cadmium yellow light

      Yellow Ochre

      Burnt Sienna

      Burnt Umber

      Cadmium Red (or similar red)

      Titanium White

      Ultramarine Blue

      Optional

Ivory Black, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo green

Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.
