aBOUT THE WORKSHOP
Have you ever sat in your kitchen twiddling your thumbs and wondering what to sketch? And all the while you are surrounded by a cacophony of interesting shapes and colours crying out for your creative attention.
Stephanie believes that common kitchen contents should not be taken for granted and are as worthy of our attention as grand landscapes and serious portraits. During this two day workshop Stephanie will show you how to look at kitchens, utensils and food with a fresh eye, blending traditional watercolour techniques with expressive sketching, using a mixture of demos and interactive exercises and bringing her passion, joy and energy to the room.
-
In this course you will learn to:
Identify kitchen objects whose shape and structure are appealing, whether it’s a kitchen grater, a croissant on its plate, a juicy pear or the ingredients ready for a baking session
Group items in an aesthetically pleasing way, bearing in mind colour, shape and composition
Draw such items using expressive sketching techniques by way of pencil, pen and other mark making implements.
Add watercolour washes to bring your sketches to life
-
Stephanie likes to start each day with a series of warm up and collaborative sketching exercises.
These are designed to warm up the hands, jump-start the brain into creative mode and distract oneself from concerns of ‘perfect picture making’ or ‘fear of the blank page’.
This is followed by some watercolour play where various techniques, including wet on wet, wet on dry, glazing and tonal values will be explored.
Stephanie will then set up a still life piece using interesting kitchen items and give a short demo on how to approach the work before guiding the class through the process of painting their own piece, making time for individual attention.
She will also encourage chat and conversation between participants almost as though seated around the kitchen table.
The class will aim to complete two still lifes over the course of the workshop.
