MEET ALEX ALFORD
Alex has been drawing the figure from life for nearly half a century; he never shies from a blank sheet of paper. His figurative work has a quiet, almost offhand confidence.
A few years before the pandemic, in an effort to learn to draw more quickly and accurately, he recorded his drawing process. In studying these videos, as an athlete might learn from video analysis of a golf swing or a running gait, he identified specific - if unconscious - actions and motions which, when he leaned into them, resulted in dramatic improvements in speed and verisimilitude. These became the core of Undrawing, the approach he teaches.
The name, Undrawing, derives from the idea of undrawing heavy drapes from windows to let light into a darkened room. It’s about illumination. Undrawing techniques are just as straightforward and easily assimilable.
Alex's work is collected around the world, and his drawings are instantly recognizable within the international figure-drawing community. Under the name AlexDrawsLife, he has built a following through an extraordinary volume of observational work..
An articulate and enthusiastic instructor, Alex’s love for teaching, his artistic knowledge, and his deep insights into the creative process have inspired thousands of artists. Those taking Alex’s workshops have reported heightened powers of observation, improved perception of relationships, increased popularity at parties, and reversal of hair loss.
