ABOUT THIS COURSE

The idea behind Vincent’s oil painting classes will be to provide an easy going relaxed atmosphere to learn and explore oil painting techniques. Rather than a focused workshop, here you the student, will choose the subject you wish to paint.

Vincent himself has tackled a diverse range of subjects and genres over his many years of painting, and so whatever your preference, whether that be still life, landscape, animal or wildlife, portraiture or figure studies; whether playful or serious, Vincent will be happy to guide you through the process: And with this guidance, it is hoped that through a gradual exploration of your own painting project, you will begin to absorb and improve your range of oil painting techniques. However, to help put a little bit more structure to this learning Vincent will also begin most classes with little demos of his own approach and thinking around various aspects of oil painting. How to start, mediums, colour choices, brushes, things to focus on at the different stages and layers of a work, glazing, scumbling and all the funny sounding jargon.

And it should also be said that it won’t be a prescriptive class where the teacher always knows best, for Vincent’s love of art history other painter’s diverse working methods has taught him how many different styles and approaches are both valid and have their own unique charm. He’ll offer advice as to how he would approach it, but you’re always free to go your own way. It’s your painting, after all, to take in whatever direction the muse is nudging you toward. In summing up, the gist of the class will be to provide a relaxed environment amidst a group of fellow painters, with some expert advice along the way, where, it is hoped, you can safely improve your craft and carve out a little creative me time.

A few things to note. As this isn’t really a class for beginners, some experience with oil painting is recommended. And don’t forget, as each student will be working on their own painting project, you’ll need to bring along your're own photo reference to work from, along with your materials and your good selves.

A materials list will be sent out upon registration or request, as Vincent will explain in this list, this is really just a suggestion informed by what Vincent himself uses and finds helpful."

Meet vincent

Vincent Keeling is a Dublin born artist who has been painting with oils for almost thirty years. In this time Vincent has exhibited in numerous well known galleries on the Dublin art scene: Combridge Fine Arts, Sol Art, The Oisin Gallery, The Doorway Gallery as well as exhibiting at The Royal Hibernian Academy annual exhibition.

In addition to this Vincent set up and ran his own gallery from 2009- 2015 where he not only displayed and promoted his own work but that of many other well known Irish artists, including Jimmy Lawlor, Chris McMorrow, Sharon McDaid, Paul Kerr, Laura Mulligan, John Kirwan and Vincent’s former teacher Brian McCarthy. In these gallery years Vincent’s own painting took a back seat.

Since 2015 he has returned to his own work with renewed vigour and with a desire to not only continue his own learning, but also to build upon his art teaching career that began in The Keeling Gallery’s latter years.
