aBOUT THE WORKSHOP

A two day workshop designed for artists that are curious to take the leap to painting en plein air (painting outdoors). This workshop is will nurture your curiosity under the direction of experienced artist Jamie Dunne in the inspirational grounds of Russborough House.

Jamie will share his experience and  give you a practical insight into the do’s and don’t’s of getting started.

You will leave this course with  practical tips and considerations that will set you up for success as you begin you plein air ventures.

  • Day 1:

Less is more: Practical advise on the benefits of decisive planning & intentional packing of your Plein Air kit.

Community & connection : Jamie will share a brief overview of the Irish Plein Air scene, the annual  Plein Air festival calendar so you can see where the opportunities are to connect with like minded creatives

Fail forward: say goodbye to the security of studio environment & lean into the spontaneity and unpredictable nature of painting outdoors.  Trust the learning opportunities that these challenges can bring.

Participants will apply the mornings learning to an afternoon paint out. Jamie will encourage and support each participant tailored to each student needs.

    Day 2

Trust the process: Jamie will offer a practical demonstration that prioritises real progress rather than seeking perfection.

Participants will join Jamie in a guided paint out, starting with sketching a confident composition. Next stage will cover the benefits of incorporating a Notan study* and  value study. The day will culminate in each artists producing a full colour Plein Air painting inspired by the historic surroundings of Russborough house .

    * Notan studies are a Japanese design concept focusing on the balance of light and dark, usually reduced to a two-value (black and white) composition, to create strong, simplified artistic structures
