aBOUT THE CLASS

This course is all about helping you build a creative practice that actually sticks and that keeps working for you long after the final session. Led by Nicholas Benedict Robinson, it's designed for anyone who wants to see real, noticeable progress in their drawing and painting, not just during class but every time they pick up a pencil or brush at home.

Over several evenings, you'll be guided through a series of gentle but effective exercises rooted in solid principles of skill development. The heart of the course is this: helping you build a sustainable, regular practice that fits into your life, while also giving you the tools and techniques to make every moment you spend creating truly count.

Week 1: understanding practice & drawing part 1 - elements of drawing i

Week 2: drawing part 2 - elements of drawing ii

Week 3: drawing part 3 - drawing from life

Week 4: painting part 1 - elements of painting i

Week 5: painting part 2 - elements of painting ii

Week 6: painting part 3 - painting from life & continuing your practice into the future

  • In this 6-week workshop, you will learn how to transform your artistic practice from aimless effort into a engine for visible improvement. The curriculum is split between foundational drawing and painting, teaching you to:

    • Master the Core Elements: You will build a strong foundation by learning the essential building blocks of art, starting with line, shape, and value in drawing, and progressing to colour theory, mixing, and temperature in painting.

    • Apply Skills to Real Life: You won't just work from imagination or photos. You will learn the crucial skill of observing and translating real, three-dimensional subjects onto a two-dimensional surface through both drawing and painting from life.

    • See Tangible Improvement: The course is designed for progression. You'll learn how to use perspective, create depth with light and shadow, build form with paint, and develop the techniques that directly lead to visible progress in your artwork.

    • Develop a Lifelong Practice Habit: Beyond the techniques, you will learn the meta-skill of how to practise. You will finally have a personalised, sustainable plan to continue improving on your own, ensuring the habits you build in this course support your art for years to come.
