aBOUT THE COURSE
Have you ever wondered about the process of working outdoors but never knew where to start or had the confidence to just ‘go-for-it? Or are you an experienced outdoor painter but would love the company of others and the support of a tutoring artist?
Over four weeks, finalist of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, artist Kieran Guckian will guide you through his complete plein air painting process. Each term (of four weeks) will have two different inspiring location as your muse to focus on across two weeks - around Enniskerry and Bray area.
Each week includes:
Choosing your subject on location
Sketching and value studies
Underpainting, defining values, and keying
Colour strategies for realism
Working from broad stages to fine details
Individual help from Kieran on your painting challenges

Practical tips for painting outdoors in changing conditions
How to find your subject and compose landscapes on site
Visualising the landscape and compressing values
Achieving realistic colour in open air
Moving confidently from first sketch to finished painting
Each week builds your skills in a new environment—river, woodland, mountain, and sea—so you leave with a diverse portfolio of plein air work and a process you can use anywhere.

Field easel or pochade box with tripod (palette if not included)
Surfaces: I’ll be working on 25cm x 35cm wood panels but any canvas, canvas boards, panel are fine.
Selection of brushes, range of sizes and shapes (flat, filbert. round)
Water container
Rags
Sketchbook, pens/pencils
Hat, Sunscreen and Bottled drinking water
I’ll be using acrylics in this workshop and my normal colours would be:
Cadmium yellow light
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
Cadmium Red (or similar red)
Titanium White
Cerulean Blue
Ultramarine Blue

Alizarin Crimson
Phthalo green
